Extra troubles of extramarital affairs, by Bosede Ola-Samuel

I am writing this as a reminder to all married couples of the dire consequences of engaging in extramarital affairs. Since it seems to have become the norm rather than the exception in our society, warnings on the inherent danger will go a long way to help individuals make a choice without claiming ignorance of the outcome. I believe that, just like smokers are aware that they are likely to die young, it’s proper to let those who want to engage in extramarital affairs know that it comes with extra weight.

The danger of not being warned about the virus clone, as in extramarital affairs, is that the upcoming generation may see it as a good part of married life. This will not be good for society, going by its consequences. I have, therefore, decided to draw attention to the grave consequences, in case anyone is going to take the plunge into the extra ‘troubles’ affairs.

As we consider the following consequences, let us know that it will take us farther than we can imagine in terms of destination and effects. In essence, the result could be disastrous. The risks involved are too numerous, and many have discovered that they are not palatable to cope with.

            Destroyed trust

It will destroy the trust, loyalty, and commitment of one’s partner when the lid is off. The truth is, the lid will definitely be off someday. It’s only a matter of time. Trust is like an egg. Once broken, the pieces are not easily put together. It becomes like the case of the person treating a mentally challenged person—you don’t sleep with both eyes closed. It’s always a case of once beaten, twice shy.

            Ill health

Couples stand the risk to their health from transmissible venereal diseases. I was fortunate to attend a health talk at the University College Hospital (UCH) one day when I took my dad there for his medical routine. I was amazed at the number of diseases that were attributed to being transmitted through sexual intercourse, one of which is cervical cancer.

            Unassuaged hurts

Hurts that may never be assuaged. It’s been discovered that women who experience or nurse hurts, especially as a result of marital problems, are more prone to terminal diseases such as cancer. Furthermore, the effect of hurts on individuals goes deeper than can be imagined. It’s killing.

Family disintegration due to the possibility of divorce.

Many families have suffered disintegration due to marital unfaithfulness. Such include a separated home, scattered children, and street fighting by couples. In the end, it’s the larger society that suffers the most through delinquents being raised from such disintegration.

Destruction of the fate of children in the marriage institution. Children seem to be more at the receiving end when their parents’ sexual escapades are exposed. They simply conclude that nobody can be trusted. And this creates a serious problem for them when and if they get married.

            Loss of life

Loss of life if the hurting partner is overwhelmed by vengeful jealousy and decides to take the law into his/her hands is a possibility. As a matter of fact, it had happened in the past to some vengeful married partners. The rate of such cases in our society is growing by the day. We can live without such situations.

These effects could be spiraling on families caught in the web, since affairs are not only with singles. Many families suffer from the consequences of marital cheating in the long run.

            Unwanted pregnancy

The consequences of unwanted pregnancies resulting from such illicit affairs have caused more harm than good to the family institution and society at large.

All these, among others, are consequences that must be considered before taking a plunge into extramarital affairs. These are what I call the extra troubles of extramarital affairs. Each person should therefore look before leaping so that there will be no regrets at the end of the day.
