The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has praised Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for his swift response to the recent killing of 16 people in Uromi.
In a statement on Tuesday, CISLAC’s executive director, Auwal Rafsanjani, expressed support for the governor’s actions, particularly the suspension of unregulated vigilante groups.
He described the move as crucial for public safety and the rule of law.
“As an organisation committed to good governance and human rights, CISLAC backs the governor’s decision to disband these groups, which pose significant security risks,” Rafsanjani said.
Governor Okpebholo visited the victims’ families to offer condolences and assured them of his commitment to justice.
He also announced the suspension of all vigilante groups and the removal of the State Security Corps commander, Friday Ibadin.
CISLAC commended the governor for ensuring that security operations adhere to legal frameworks, thereby upholding citizens’ rights.
The organisation also acknowledged the state government’s swift investigation, which has already led to the arrest of 14 suspects.
Rafsanjani welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s assurance that security agencies are working to bring those responsible to justice.
He also highlighted the collaboration between the Edo and Kano State Governments as a model of unity and leadership in times of crisis.
“This tragedy underscores the need for strong leadership and cross-regional solidarity,” he said. “Governor Okpebholo’s efforts are a step toward fostering peace and preventing division.”
CISLAC also recognized the bravery of Uromi residents who risked their lives to help victims, emphasizing that their courage reflects the spirit of unity that binds Nigerians together.
