The Presidency has urged opposition politicians to set aside their electoral ambitions until the 2027 general elections, cautioning against attempts to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
This statement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Saturday.
Dare’s comments come amid growing tensions between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties, particularly in light of allegations of political interference.
Recently, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused President Tinubu of allegedly disbursing N50 million to certain opposition figures in an effort to create discord within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The APC, however, has firmly denied these claims.
Meanwhile, former Kaduna State Governor and APC chieftain, Nasir El-Rufai, has described the current state of governance and opposition politics in Nigeria as a “national emergency.”
Speaking at a national democracy conference in Abuja, El-Rufai criticized the APC for straying from its founding principles and called on opposition groups to unite in defense of democratic values.
In response, Dare dismissed the criticisms as mere political maneuvering, arguing that opposition leaders are more focused on causing distractions than engaging in constructive dialogue.
“While President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, some political opportunists were busy stirring up unnecessary controversy,” Dare stated.
He described the recent opposition gathering as a forum for recycled political rhetoric, adding that Nigerians should critically assess their motives ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The political stage is gradually being set, but the real contest is not now. President Tinubu remains focused on governance and is not swayed by political distractions. His priority is to improve the lives of Nigerians and strengthen the economy,” Dare asserted.
He concluded by reaffirming the President’s commitment to national development, stating, “This is 2025, not 2027. If anyone wishes to test their popularity, they should wait for the next general elections. For now, President Tinubu is dedicated to delivering transformative leadership for Nigeria.”
