Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu is considering making a change in goal following Chiamaka Nnadozie’s costly mistake in Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Nnadozie endured a difficult moment in the 19th minute when she failed to properly deal with Maeva Nyadjou’s free-kick, inadvertently pushing the ball into her own net.
The goal proved to be the difference as the Indomitable Lionesses held on to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Nigeria’s elimination ended their quest for a record-extending 11th WAFCON crown and also cost them the opportunity to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons, however, still have another route to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
Madugu’s side will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a crucial play-in encounter on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation playoffs.
Ahead of the showdown with Desiree Ellis’ side, Madugu admitted he could turn to one of the other goalkeepers in his squad as he weighs his options for the must-win encounter.
“It’s natural that when things like this happen, we have to do an overall assessment of the team,” Madugu was quoted by ESPN.
“what went wrong, what we did well, where did we get it wrong.
“We have to do an overall assessment and see what we can do in the shortest possible time before the next game against South Africa.
“There’s nothing bad in exploring other players.”
