Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to former champions Spain in their Group F opening fixture.
Spain dominated proceedings from the outset, putting the Falconets under sustained pressure while Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
The Spaniards took the lead in the 13th minute when Marisa Garcia finished off a bright attacking move to give La Rojita an early advantage.
Spain continued to control the game and created several opportunities to extend their lead before half-time, but Nigeria’s defence held firm to keep the deficit at one goal.
The Falconets showed resilience after the break, battling to remain in contention despite continued pressure from the European side.
However, Spain eventually doubled their advantage with 17 minutes remaining. Alba Cerrato found the back of the net past Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to secure all three points for the former champions.
Nigeria will look to bounce back when they face China PR in their second Group F match on Thursday.
