President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s public commendation of the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, during the presentation of the Nigerian Exchange Group’s performance report at the State House was more than a fleeting moment of presidential appreciation. It was a powerful affirmation that competence, vision and measurable performance remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s economic renewal.
In the presence of captains of industry, financial market operators and members of the Economic Management Team, the President deliberately acknowledged Dr. Adedeji’s contribution to the reforms stabilising the economy and rebuilding investor confidence. Such recognition from the Commander in Chief is not casually bestowed. It is reserved for those whose work is producing tangible national impact.
For me, the moment carried even deeper significance because I have the privilege of working directly with Dr. Zacch Adedeji. Beyond the public accolades and impressive statistics is a leader whose commitment to excellence I have witnessed firsthand. I have seen the long hours, the painstaking attention to detail, the relentless pursuit of solutions and the unwavering insistence that every policy must ultimately serve the Nigerian people. Those who work around him often describe him as the goalkeeper of the team because he anticipates challenges before they arise, protects the integrity of every process and gives everyone around him the confidence to perform at their highest level.
Nigeria’s ongoing fiscal reforms did not emerge by chance. They are the product of deliberate planning, bold leadership and the political will to confront structural weaknesses that have constrained economic growth for decades. Since assuming office, President Tinubu has pursued difficult but necessary reforms, while Dr. Adedeji has provided critical leadership in redesigning Nigeria’s tax administration to support those reforms.
For decades, Nigeria operated under tax laws that had become outdated and increasingly disconnected from the realities of a modern economy. Businesses struggled with multiple taxation, overlapping responsibilities among revenue agencies, administrative inefficiencies and compliance burdens that discouraged investment. Rather than merely seeking to collect more taxes, Dr. Adedeji in line with the express directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, championed reforms that make taxation simpler, fairer and more efficient.
The ongoing tax reform programme represents one of the most ambitious fiscal restructuring efforts in Nigeria’s history. It seeks to harmonise tax administration, reduce the cost of compliance, eliminate duplications, strengthen digital tax administration, improve transparency and expand the tax net by bringing more economic activities into the formal system. These reforms are designed to increase voluntary compliance while creating a more competitive environment for businesses.
The philosophy behind these reforms is simple but transformative. Sustainable revenue growth does not come from imposing higher taxes on the same taxpayers. It comes from widening the tax base, blocking leakages, improving efficiency and creating an economy where businesses can thrive. That philosophy has increasingly defined the work of the Nigeria Revenue Service under Dr. Adedeji’s leadership.
The positive outcomes are becoming increasingly visible. Macroeconomic stability is gradually improving. Investor confidence has strengthened. International financial institutions and global rating agencies have acknowledged Nigeria’s reform trajectory. Most significantly, the Nigerian Exchange Group reported that market capitalisation has risen from approximately ₦30 trillion when President Tinubu assumed office in 2023 to about ₦160 trillion today, with projections of reaching ₦230 trillion before the end of the year. The All Share Index has also reached historic levels, reflecting renewed confidence in Nigeria’s economic direction.
These figures are not merely numbers on a financial report. They represent increased wealth creation, stronger investor confidence, greater opportunities for businesses to raise capital and a financial market that is increasingly viewed as a destination for investment. Such progress depends on strong fiscal institutions capable of generating sustainable revenue while maintaining investor confidence.
It was therefore both fitting and reassuring that President Tinubu publicly acknowledged Dr. Zacch Adedeji’s contribution to this national effort. His recognition sends a clear signal that this administration values substance over rhetoric and performance over publicity.
Working closely with Dr. Adedeji has reinforced my belief that transformational leadership is defined not by speeches but by execution. He leads with discipline, intellectual depth and an uncommon sense of responsibility. He demands excellence because he believes public institutions must earn the trust of citizens through results. That culture of accountability continues to inspire everyone privileged to serve alongside him.
As Nigeria advances towards its aspiration of building a one trillion dollar economy, the importance of capable institutions and visionary leadership cannot be overstated. Fiscal sustainability, efficient revenue mobilisation, investor confidence and modern tax administration will remain central pillars of that journey. Dr. Zacch Adedeji has emerged as one of the principal architects of those reforms, translating presidential vision into practical outcomes that are already reshaping the nation’s economic landscape.
President Tinubu’s commendation was therefore more than deserved. It acknowledged a public servant whose work is helping redefine Nigeria’s fiscal future. I am therefore proud to be associated with him. His commitment to excellence continues to remind us that meaningful national transformation is achieved not by promises alone but by disciplined leadership, courageous reforms and an unwavering commitment to serving the nation.
