Sydney was thrown into mourning on Saturday after a man was killed in a shark attack off Long Reef Beach on the city’s northern coastline.
Police said the victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was bitten by what is believed to have been a large shark while surfing in the morning.
Despite efforts by fellow surfers to pull him ashore, he succumbed to his injuries before emergency services arrived.
Authorities confirmed that two broken sections of the man’s surfboard have been recovered for forensic analysis.
Eyewitnesses reported that several surfers rushed to assist the victim, but his lower body had sustained devastating injuries.
The incident marks the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 2022, when British diving instructor Simon Nellist, 35, was killed at Little Bay. Before that, the city had not recorded a deadly shark encounter since 1963.
In response, beaches stretching from Manly to Narrabeen were closed indefinitely as surf lifesavers and police ordered swimmers and surfers out of the water.
