The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old suspect in connection with the killing of a lecturer at Benue State University, Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday in Makurdi.
According to the police, officers attached to the ‘D’ Division responded to a distress call from the Adaka area, where they discovered the bodies of the professor and his 19-year-old brother, both believed to have been attacked by unidentified gunmen.
Edet identified the suspect as Abdullahi Usman, a resident of Awe in Nasarawa State, saying he was arrested in connection with the killings.
“The suspect, Abdullahi Usman, 23, from Awe, Nasarawa State, has been arrested in connection with the crime, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects involved,” the statement said.
Professor Nyityo, a member of the Department of History at Benue State University, and his younger brother were reportedly murdered at their residence in the Adaka community of Makurdi Local Government Area during the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident has sparked grief within the university and the Adaka community, despite the ongoing strike by lecturers at the institution.

Police said investigations are continuing as efforts intensify to identify and arrest other persons linked to the attack.
