A woman, Bolatito, has asked the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve her marriage, alleging that her husband, Olajide, became violent and accused her of infidelity after he developed sexual impotence.
Bolatito also alleged that her husband physically assaulted her on several occasions and once attempted to strangle her during the night.
The plaintiff told the court that their marriage, which began peacefully, deteriorated after her husband allegedly became impotent, claiming that he subsequently became aggressive and regularly turned minor disagreements into physical fights.
She said Olajide would allegedly beat her severely, sometimes throwing her out of their home late at night.
Bolatito said she reported one of the incidents at a police station, where the Divisional Police Officer attempted to mediate between the couple without success.
According to her, the situation worsened when her husband allegedly accused her of being unfaithful, an allegation she denied before the police.
She told the court that she informed the DPO that her husband was impotent and pleaded for permission to return home after he initially refused to allow her back.
Bolatito, however, alleged that her husband later attempted to kill her by covering her face with a pillow and grabbing her neck while they were in bed.
She said she struggled with him and managed to escape from the house that night, adding that he had since refused to allow her back into the apartment or permit her to take her belongings.
The woman further alleged that Olajide had prevented her from seeing their children, prompting her to seek an end to the marriage.
She told the court, “I got married to my husband in 2007 after we met, dated and he impregnated me. We had a church wedding, but no bride price was paid.
“Our marriage was peaceful and filled with bliss. We enjoyed each other’s company and extended our love to our children when we started having them.
“But all these changed a few years into our marriage after my husband became impotent. My once loving husband suddenly turned aggressive, cruel and violent.”
Bolatito also prayed the court to grant her custody of their children and order her husband to take responsibility for their upkeep.
Olajide reportedly agreed that the couple should go their separate ways.

The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, subsequently adjourned the case for the defence.
