Nollywood actor Mofe Duncan has publicly criticised media personality Daddy Freeze over his comments regarding the Service of Songs held in honour of late actor Alex Ekubo.
The tribute event took place on Wednesday, June 10, at Monarch Event Centre in Lekki and drew several celebrities and close associates of the late actor.
Daddy Freeze had earlier sparked reactions after attending the gathering in black despite the all-white dress code. In a video shared online, he apologised for his outfit and questioned parts of the programme, including the sermon delivered and the worship session led by gospel singer Mercy Chinwo, which he described as turning the event into a concert. He also questioned whether people still understood the purpose of funeral gatherings.
Responding in a lengthy Instagram post, Mofe Duncan argued that Daddy Freeze misunderstood the nature of the event and made the occasion unnecessarily about himself.
According to the actor, the gathering was never intended to be a funeral but rather a celebration of Alex’s life through worship, tributes and songs.
“With all due respect, Sir… the night wasn’t about you or anyone else but ALEXX,” he wrote.
Prompt News reports Mofe said he generally avoids unnecessary public commentary but felt compelled to speak because Freeze’s remarks crossed a line.
He stressed that hymns had been performed during the programme and noted that Alex’s close friends repeatedly shared that worship was something deeply important to him.
“It was NOT a FUNERAL, it was a NIGHT OF TRIBUTES & A SERVICE OF SONGS.
HYMNS were sung, Sir. Not once… Not Twice. I’m guessing you didn’t arrive early because I personally cried during the rendition of BLESSED ASSURANCE.”

He added that the worship-focused format reflected the kind of send-off Alex himself would have wanted.
“It was a NIGHT OF WORSHIP… members of ALEXX’s inner circle reiterated countless times that ALEXX LOVED TO WORSHIP. So, a ‘concert’ of worship, as you expressed, is exactly what ALEXX would’ve wanted.”
Mofe also questioned Freeze’s decision to criticise the event publicly despite not following the requested dress code.
“You shouldn’t even have the temerity to voice your opinion because, for starters, you didn’t adhere to the dress code. You wore BLACK to an ALL WHITE celebration of ALEXX’s life.”
He ended his message by expressing disappointment that Freeze chose to leave the event and later share his frustrations online.
“The audacity to come online and say you were angry and you left. May people not walk out on your own night of tributes.
With these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to EDUCATE as well as CONVINCE you and not CONFUSE you that you stepped GRAVELY out of line and the night was not about you or your wants, needs or your opinion”.
