Team Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong delivered another impressive performance at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, claiming the silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, Prompt News Online reports.
Nyong lifted a combined total of 168kg to secure a place on the podium, and add to Nigeria’s growing medal haul at the Games.
India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom dominated the event, winning gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry claimed the bronze medal with 167kg.
Nauru’s Jo-Beth Deireragea finished fourth with 161kg, followed by Tammy Wong in fifth on 160kg.
Nikole Roberts placed sixth with 154kg, Alex Mackay finished seventh after lifting 142kg, while Janet Atieno Oduor rounded off the field in eighth with 133kg.
Nyong’s silver takes Team Nigeria’s medal tally in Glasgow to seven—three gold and four silver medals—keeping the West Africans among the leading nations on the medals table.
Nigeria will be aiming to further boost that tally later on Sunday, with several athletes still scheduled to compete across multiple events.
