Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured traders affected by the Alesinloye Market fire in Ibadan that they will receive prompt assistance.
During a visit to assess the damage on Wednesday, the governor, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, stated that the government would act swiftly once it receives a comprehensive report on the incident.
The fire, which broke out around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, destroyed numerous shops and goods valued at millions of naira.
Makinde expressed sympathy for the affected traders and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief through the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA).
He added that efforts would be made to collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other concerned individuals to support the victims.
To prevent further incidents, he directed the Ibadan South-West Local Government and the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to strengthen security within the market.
He also instructed market leaders to assess the number of affected shops and provide a detailed report on the fire’s cause.
“This market has been a vital commercial center for years, and it is truly unfortunate to see such destruction,” Makinde said. “We will do everything possible to assist those impacted and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.”
