The Kannywood industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Yakubu Mato, fondly known by fans as Malam Nata’ala.
The comic star reportedly passed away on Sunday night after battling a prolonged illness.
Malam Nata’ala gained national recognition for his outstanding portrayal of an almajiri school teacher in Arewa24’s Hausa drama series, Dadin Kowa. His expressive and humorous acting style made him one of the show’s most beloved characters among audiences across Northern Nigeria.
Confirming the news, one of the writers of Dadin Kowa, Fauziya D. Sulaiman, shared a heartfelt post on Facebook, saying: “Innalillahi wa’inna ilaihi rajiun, just now the news of the death of Malam Nata’ala. May Allah forgive him, may Allah make his sickness an apology.”
Before finding fame on Dadin Kowa, the late actor had appeared in numerous Kannywood movies and comedies, earning a reputation for his energetic performances and sharp sense of humour. He was often seen playing the role of a vocal Qur’anic teacher struggling to keep peace in a polygamous household.

Prompt News reports his declining health in recent months had drawn public sympathy, leading to fundraising efforts and reported assistance from both the Yobe State Government and Niger Republic authorities.
Reacting to his death, Yobe State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ya Jalo Badama, described Malam Nata’ala as a man who left a significant mark both in entertainment and politics.
She said, “Mahaluki Na Ta’ala was a respected figure known for his immense contributions to the entertainment industry and his active participation during the campaign of His Excellency, Governor (Dr) Mai Mala Buni CON. His passing is a great loss not only to the film industry but also to the APC family and the entire people of Yobe State.”
The commissioner extended condolences to the government and people of Yobe State, the Potiskum Emirate Council, and Potiskum Local Government Area.
A native of Yobe State, Malam Nata’ala was among the pioneers of the Chamama comedy era, where he starred alongside the late Rabilu Musa (Dan Ibro) long before the rise of Arewa24 productions.
Details regarding his burial were still being awaited as of press time.
