Robert Azibaola, cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed concerns raised by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo and human-rights lawyer Chidi Odinkalu over Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Monday, Azibaola insisted that Jonathan remains “100% constitutionally and legally qualified” to seek the office if he chooses.
Keyamo had earlier warned the Peoples Democratic Party against offering Jonathan its ticket, arguing that his past swearing-in ceremonies as president would present legal hurdles. Odinkalu also questioned the legality of a possible comeback.
But Azibaola countered, saying Jonathan neither requested nor required their “unsolicited legal advice.” He noted that the former president already had a team of senior lawyers providing guidance, while describing himself as a more seasoned activist than both men during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggles in the 1990s.
“Please note: GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to,” Azibaola wrote. “Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be.”
He clarified, however, that his remarks were not a confirmation of Jonathan’s intention to run in 2027.
