A Delta State High Court has ordered the remand of Victor Ojei, popularly known as “Wong Box,” over allegations of assaulting staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) during a disconnection exercise in Asaba.
Ojei, described as a self-acclaimed activist, was arraigned on Monday on three counts bordering on threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence, offences contrary to sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code.
The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, confirmed the ruling in a post on X, stating that the defendant would remain in custody until his bail conditions are met. “Nobody is above the law,” he added.
Police reports indicate that Ojei was first arrested on August 14 after allegedly attacking BEDC officials who disconnected his property on Anyameluhor Street, Asaba, over an outstanding electricity bill of ₦4.87 million.
He was said to have brandished a cutlass, threatened the workers, and ordered them to reconnect power to his compound.
In the ensuing chaos, a pregnant BEDC staff member reportedly fell while attempting to escape the confrontation. “The technician, out of fear of being murdered, reconnected the light,” the command’s statement read in part.
A video of the incident later surfaced online, showing Ojei shouting at the officials and declaring, “I go cut una, and nothing go happen… I am Wong Box of Delta State. I am a politician.”
