The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Sanusi, has disclosed that detention facilities under his command have been fitted with air conditioners as part of efforts to ensure humane treatment of suspects.
Sanusi made the disclosure on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasising that individuals in police custody deserve to be treated with dignity.
According to him, the initiative reflects his commitment to upholding human rights standards within the command.
He said, “As part of efforts to respect human rights, I have ensured that even our cells are equipped with air conditioners. I personally see to it that suspects are kept in conditions that reflect their humanity.”
The police boss added that suspects often express satisfaction with the improved conditions upon their release.
Sanusi maintained that arrest does not amount to a conviction, stressing that only the court has the authority to determine the guilt or innocence of any suspect.
“The fact that someone is arrested does not mean they are guilty, regardless of the alleged offence, until a court of competent jurisdiction decides their case,” he said.
He further assured that the command would continue to improve the welfare of detainees, noting that proper treatment could help foster better public perception of the police.
