The Gombe State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged assault of a police inspector, Ibrahim Musa, by an Area Commander, ACP Alex Gwaza.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, disclosed this in a telephone interview, saying the Commissioner of Police had directed the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the matter.
Abdullahi said the command was aware of the allegations but noted that the parties involved had given different accounts of what transpired.
“We are aware of the report and we have started investigation in that regard,” the police spokesman said.
According to him, the investigation became necessary to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly as the inspector and the Area Commander had presented conflicting narratives.
“There are different claims from both the inspector and the officer. It is only a thorough investigation that will clear this,” he added.
Abdullahi said Musa alleged that he was beaten after being detained for two days over what the Area Commander reportedly regarded as disobedience to an official directive.
The spokesman said the inspector was alleged to have disregarded directives issued by his superior.
“The inspector disobeyed his order. He gave some directives and the inspector decided to flout them,” Abdullahi stated.
However, the police spokesman stressed that disciplinary measures against an officer must follow due process, adding that the ongoing investigation would determine what actually occurred.
He declined to comment further on the specific allegations against Gwaza, saying doing so could prejudice the investigation.
“Like I have told you, the CID is investigating. So, I wouldn’t want to comment while the investigation is ongoing or has not yet been concluded,” he said.
Abdullahi identified the officers involved as ACP Alex Gwaza and Inspector Ibrahim Musa, adding that the Commissioner of Police had specifically ordered a “full and transparent investigation” into the allegations.
