Nine people were killed on Monday when a commercial bus and a Sino truck collided along the Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred around 4:55pm at the Bethel area of the expressway, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The spokesperson for the command, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
He said the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number 14B-299DT, belonging to Delta Line, and a white Sino truck with registration number AAB162XD, operated by Bill Gas Solution Limited.
Odunsi-Oyewole said all nine people involved in the crash, comprising three males and six females, died in the incident.
He said the crash occurred during rainfall, leaving the road surface wet, while preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause.
The statement read in part, “A total of nine persons, comprising three males and six females, were involved in the crash. Sadly, all nine persons were killed in the incident.
“The crash occurred while it was raining, with the road pavement wet. The road itself was paved.
Preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash.”
According to the FRSC spokesperson, the rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call, while the bodies of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode.
He added that the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
The Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to exercise caution during rainfall, obey speed limits and maintain safe following distances.
