The Enugu State Government has terminated the contract of a construction firm over structural defects discovered at one of the Smart Green School project sites in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, revealed that the defects — including cracked walls — were identified through internal monitoring mechanisms before a video of the site began circulating on social media.
“We wish to assure the good people of Enugu State and the general public that the said defects had already been identified through our internal monitoring systems well before the video surfaced online,” Onyia stated.
He said the state promptly terminated the contract and disengaged the contractor responsible for the substandard work.
Onyia further noted that the affected site has been scheduled for full remediation to ensure compliance with the state’s safety and structural standards.
“The safety of our children, teachers, workers, and host communities remains our highest priority,” he emphasized.
To prevent a recurrence of such issues across the 260 Smart Green Schools currently under construction, the government has introduced a comprehensive, three-tiered quality control and monitoring system.
According to Onyia, the oversight framework involves local government engineers, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, and the Governor’s Delivery Unit — which provides high-level, independent verification at every stage of project execution.

“This multi-layered approach ensures that no structural flaw goes undetected and that corrective measures are taken swiftly and without compromise,” he said.
He assured the public that the incident was isolated, noting that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is currently overseeing more than 1,500 ongoing projects across the state.
“We will not relent until every smart school becomes a symbol of excellence, innovation, and integrity,” Onyia added.
