Balogun Nike Nafisat has made history as the first female pilot produced by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), earning recognition for breaking barriers in the country’s aviation and public service sectors.
Her achievement recently attracted commendation from Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, who disclosed on his X handle that he met the Customs officer at London Heathrow Airport.
Omokri praised Balogun for her pioneering feat, describing her as a shining example of the limitless potential of Nigerian women.
He also applauded her contribution to strengthening national security through the interception of contraband and supporting the generation of excise revenue for the country.
According to him, Balogun has joined the league of distinguished Nigerian women who have recorded remarkable achievements in their respective fields.
He expressed confidence that her success would inspire more women to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to national development.
He listed notable trailblazers such as Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, regarded as Africa’s pioneering female driver and the first Nigerian woman to drive a car, Professor Grace Alele Williams, the first African woman to earn a doctorate degree in Mathematics and Nigeria’s first female Vice Chancellor, as well as Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, the first woman to become Director General of the World Trade Organisation.
Born in Kaduna State, Balogun hails from Odo Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.
She joined the Nigeria Customs Service in 2002 as a Customs Assistant and began her career in the Service’s Airwing Unit as a cabin crew member.
Her growing passion for aviation motivated her to pursue further training.
She obtained an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services and later earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University.
Balogun subsequently underwent professional flight training at the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, where she obtained her pilot certification. The training was sponsored by the Nigeria Customs Service.
Despite the demanding nature of combining official responsibilities with flight training, she remained focused and resilient, overcoming fatigue, pressure and self doubt to emerge as the Service’s first female pilot.
She is widely credited with strengthening the operational capacity of the NCS Airwing while serving as a role model for women seeking careers in aviation and public service.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Balogun is passionate about youth development and female empowerment.
She hopes to contribute further to Nigeria’s aviation industry by mentoring young people and encouraging them to pursue their aspirations.
She believes success is built on hard work, consistency and courage, urging young Nigerians not to allow fear to prevent them from pursuing their goals.
