African champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons claimed a 2-1 victory over Senegal in an international friendly at the Remo Stars Sports Complex, Ikenne, on Friday.
The Super Falcons dominated possession from the outset and were rewarded in the 32nd minute when former African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, calmly converted a penalty to open the scoring.
Nigeria doubled their advantage four minutes before halftime through Toni Payne. The Everton midfielder expertly finished off a delightful pass from right-back Shukurat Oladipo to cap a well-worked move.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came close to adding a third goal before the break, but her effort was superbly saved by the Senegal goalkeeper.
The intensity of the contest dropped after the interval as Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu made several changes to his side.
Oshoala and Folashade Ijamilusi both had opportunities to extend Nigeria’s lead in the second half, but neither could find the target.
Senegal grabbed a late consolation goal in the 86th minute when Sokhna Nogaye unleashed a long-range strike that found the back of the net.
The two teams will face off again in a second friendly at the same venue on Monday as both sides continue preparations for upcoming competitions.
