President Bola Tinubu has nominated Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The announcement was made through a press statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), who revealed that Dr. Cardoso’s nomination had received the President’s approval for a five-year term, pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.
Ngelale noted that the appointment is in compliance with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which grants the President the authority to appoint the CBN Governor and Deputy Governors, subject to Senate confirmation.
Below are things to know about the new CBN Governor.
1. Olayemi Micheal Cardoso is a Nigerian banker, chartered stockbroker and public policy maker.
2. Cardoso studied managerial and administrative studies at the Aston University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. He has a Master’s degree from the Harvard Kennedy School in public administration.
4. He once served as the chairman of Citibank Nigeria and also Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.
5. He became a member of the Cities Alliance’s Africa Think Tank Group, a group created to solve urban development challenges.
6. He has served as a board member of MRS Oil and was the chairman of the board of EFinA.
7. Cardoso is a member of the advisory board of Lagos Business School and chairman of the board of African Venture Philanthropy Alliance.
8. He is the founding chairman and co-chair of Ehingbeti Summit, the Lagos state economic summit.
