One observation from the ongoing FIFA World Cup has continued to occupy my thoughts.
Several African teams have demonstrated exceptional technical ability, tactical organization, athleticism and passion. They have shown that they can compete with and often outperform the very best teams in the world for long periods of the match.
Yet football is not won over 75 or 80 minutes.
It is won over 90 minutes and often beyond.
The closing stages of a match are unlike any other phase. Physical fatigue begins to influence decision making. Mental fatigue sets in. Pressure intensifies. Every touch, every pass and every defensive decision carries greater consequence.
This is where late game resilience becomes a decisive competitive advantage.
The difference between progressing and going home is often not talent, but composure under pressure, emotional control, concentration, communication, leadership and the collective belief to execute the game plan until the final whistle.
This is not a criticism of African football. On the contrary, the quality on display has shown just how far African football has come.
Rather, it is an invitation for reflection.
As the technical and physical gap continues to narrow globally, perhaps the next competitive edge lies in investing just as deliberately in performance psychology, mental conditioning and pressure management as we do in tactics, fitness and technical development.
Training for the final fifteen minutes should become as intentional as training for the opening fifteen.
Championships are often decided not by who plays the best football for most of the game, but by who thinks the clearest, stays the calmest and performs the strongest when the pressure is at its highest.
The future of African football is undoubtedly bright. Strengthening late game resilience may well be one of the keys that transforms promising performances into historic achievements.
