The Abuja branch of the Umuolo Development Union (UDU), Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, has announced plans to host its annual Iwa Ji (New Yam) Festival and Awards Ceremony on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

The colourful cultural celebration will take place at Maitama, Abuja, starting at 2:00 p.m. prompt.

According to the organisers, this year’s event will combine traditional festivities with recognition of distinguished individuals who have contributed to community growth and excellence.

Among the honourees are the late Diokpa Pascal Azuka Chizea, who will receive a posthumous recognition award, and Diokpa Isreal Chinwuba Ogbue, slated for a lifetime community commendation award. Others include Dr. Tony Lukachukwu Elumelu, Bessie Nneka Ifekwuna, Kanayo Precious, Major General Raymond Nkem Ochei, and Frank Ndubuisi Onyemem, who will all receive various categories of recognition and achievement awards.

The festival will be graced by eminent personalities, including Sir Chika Chiejina, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Onicha Olona Development Union (OODU) Worldwide; Barr. Anthony Ashibogwu, President, OODU Abuja; Mrs. Blessing Nkiru Uchebudike, President-General, OODU Women’s Wing; and Mrs. Blessing Onwubuya, President, OODU Abuja Women’s Wing.

The Father of the Day will be Diokpa Eziafe Ashinze, while the Chief Host is Chief Ndubuisi Isiekwenemgbu, President, UDU Abuja.

Cultural highlights will include a traditional Anioma dance competition, with instant cash prizes to be won across male, female, and children’s categories.

Attendees are encouraged to appear in all-white Akwa Ocha attire, adorned with coral beads, as a mark of Anioma identity and pride.

Organisers say the Iwa Ji Festival remains a unifying platform for Umuolo sons, daughters, and friends to celebrate culture, heritage, and community spirit.

Enquiries and RSVP can be directed to Prof. Jideofor Chizea, Chairman, Iwa Ji 2025 Committee, and Chief Michael Mukwuzi, Awards Sub-Committee.
