Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time in their history after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in a tense final, Prompt News Online reports.
Substitute Ferran Torres scored the winning goal deep into extra time.
La Roja produced a disciplined and composed performance, limiting Argentina’s attacking threat while taking their opportunity at the other end to score the decisive goal.
Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser and applied sustained pressure in the closing stages, but Spain’s defence stood firm to preserve their narrow advantage.
The victory completed a remarkable campaign for Spain, who showed quality, resilience and tactical maturity throughout the tournament.
Spain had previously defeated Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France in the knockout stages before overcoming Argentina in the final.
The triumph is Spain’s first World Cup success since they lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
For Argentina, the defeat ended their hopes of becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cup titles.
