The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised Nigerians celebrating former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 85th birthday.
Sowore, in a post on his verified X handle on Monday night, accused the former military ruler of contributing to the problems confronting Nigeria through what he described as selfish and harmful decisions while in power.
The activist argued that Babangida’s long life should not overshadow the controversy surrounding his years in government and the consequences of some of his major political decisions.
He wrote that Babangida had “lived long but is no longer living well,” while alleging that Nigeria would not have deteriorated to its present state had the former military leader exercised power differently.
Sowore also questioned the legacy being celebrated by Babangida’s supporters, arguing that history should focus not only on birthday tributes but also on the impact of the decisions taken during his administration.
Babangida ruled Nigeria as military Head of State from August 1985 until August 1993, when he stepped aside following widespread controversy over his annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The election, widely regarded as having been won by the late businessman and politician, MKO Abiola, remains one of the most significant political events in Nigeria’s history.
