Four Almajiris die after suspected food poisoning No fewer than four Almajiris, pupils attending a Qur’anic school, have reportedly died in Kano State after consuming food suspected to have been contaminated.
The incident occurred at the Tsangaya school of Malam Iliyasu Mai Tsangaya in Kadage Sharifai, Ungoggo Local Government Area of the state.
The National Chairman of the Tsangaya Media Network, Alaramma Sani Musa Nuhu, confirmed the deaths in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the statement, the affected pupils developed complications suspected to be linked to food poisoning and were subsequently taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
However, the pupils reportedly died while receiving treatment at the hospital on Sunday night, August 16, 2026.
The statement said, “The students, however, reportedly died at the hospital on Sunday night, August 16th, 2026.”It was not immediately clear what food the pupils had consumed or the substance suspected to have caused the poisoning, leaving the circumstances surrounding the incident unclear.
Following their deaths, the remains of the victims were reportedly buried after the necessary approval was obtained from the District Head, also known as the Dagaci, and the Divisional Police Officer.
The development has raised concerns over the safety and welfare of pupils in Tsangaya schools, particularly regarding food and health conditions.As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
