Civil rights activist and political analyst, Deji Adeyanju, has criticized Nigerian politicians for what he described as their obsession with using rice to address the country’s pressing challenges.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Adeyanju said political leaders often resort to distributing rice as a response to crises ranging from inflation to insecurity and poor infrastructure.
“This is why Nigerian politicians believe the solution to all our problems is rice. Inflation: share rice; Hike in fuel price: share rice; Insecurity: share rice; Lack of electricity: share rice; Lack of good roads: share rice; Campaign: share rice; Election Day: share rice,” he wrote.
His remarks came in reaction to a recent viral jollof rice cooking event by celebrity chef Hilda Baci, which he linked to politicians’ recurring use of rice as a political tool.

Adeyanju noted that food distribution has become a default tactic for politicians seeking mass appeal rather than addressing the root causes of the country’s socio-economic problems.
