The Lagos State Police Command has assured residents that the state remains calm and secure despite reports of protests in parts of the country demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, gave the assurance on Monday in Ikeja during a “Show of Force” exercise conducted by the command to demonstrate its readiness to maintain law and order across the state.
Fayoade said the operation was aimed at reassuring the public of their safety and deterring potential troublemakers.
“We want residents to know that they are safe and can go about their lawful businesses without fear.
We have made strategic deployments to all identifiable points where protests have previously taken place,” the police chief stated.
According to him, the command has stationed personnel at major flashpoints, including the Lekki Toll Gate, Ojota, Maryland, and Gani Fawehinmi Park, to prevent any disruption of public peace.
“Protests are allowed anywhere in the world, but when you take laws into your hands and disturb public peace, that is no longer a protest,” he warned. “We will not allow anyone to infringe on the rights of others who are going about their daily activities.”
The commissioner added that police formations across the state had been directed to send situation reports every 15 minutes for real-time monitoring of developments.
“So far, there has been no report of unrest, traffic disruption, or attack in any part of Lagos.
Areas like Ojota, Maryland, and Lekki remain peaceful with officers maintaining a visible presence,” he said.
Earlier reports indicated a clash between security operatives and #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protesters in some parts of the country, where tear gas was used to disperse demonstrators demanding Kanu’s immediate release.
The protest was convened by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and reportedly endorsed by several opposition parties.
Kanu is currently facing trial on charges including terrorism, treason, and incitement.
