The Ghana Police Service has foiled an alleged attempt by a robbery gang to attack three banks in the Labone area of Accra, killing two suspects and arresting another.
The arrested suspect was identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi.
The police, in a statement shared on its X handle on Thursday, said it received intelligence at about 10:45am on August 13, 2026, that suspected robbers were planning to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.
Following the information, a police response team was deployed to the area, where the suspected gang members were reportedly sighted in vehicles parked near the banks.
According to the police, one of the vehicles sped away after the suspects noticed the presence of security operatives, prompting officers to give chase.
The pursuit resulted in the arrest of Maazi, while another occupant of the vehicle reportedly escaped.
The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police.
The officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two of the suspects.
The police said two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson bearing registration number GS 7915-17, were recovered from the scene.
A blow pistol was also reportedly recovered.
The police said Maazi remained in custody and was assisting investigators with the ongoing probe, while the bodies of the two deceased suspects had been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for successfully preventing the planned bank attack.
