The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that 17 people were killed during a series of armed attacks by suspected herders in Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas.
The incidents occurred between Thursday evening and early Friday.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, a large group of armed militia invaded the Sankera axis of the state on Thursday night.
The attackers targeted the Gbagir area in Ukum and parts of Katsina-Ala in Logo.
Anene stated that the Commissioner of Police, Steve H. Yabanet, swiftly deployed tactical teams to reinforce local officers and coordinate efforts with other security agencies.
The joint forces engaged the attackers during the early hours of Friday.
While attempting to repel the assailants, the attackers reportedly opened fire on farmers they encountered.
Five victims were discovered in the Gbagir area and taken to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
In a separate but simultaneous assault in Logo, twelve more people were killed before police could arrive, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 17.
Anene added that security personnel are still pursuing the assailants, who have retreated into the forests bordering Taraba State.
She also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could incite panic or tension.
The Police Commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to restoring peace in the region and urged residents to support ongoing security efforts.
The statement concluded with an appeal for continued cooperation from communities in the Sankera axis.
