Nigeria at 27 Years of Democracy: United in Survival, Faltering in Systemic Decay — NACAT

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day today, June 12, 2026, the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) joins millions of citizens in profound reflection. Against all structural odds, deep ethno-religious fault lines, and repeated economic convulsions, Nigeria has remained a single, united entity since attaining civil rule in 1999.

This unbroken 27-year stretch of democratic governance is a testament to the resilient spirit of the Nigerian people, who have continuously chosen the ballot box over bullets, and co-existence over fragmentation.

However, NACAT strongly warns that unity without equity, accountability, and economic security is an unsustainable facade. Democracy is not merely the absence of military rule; it is the presence of the rule of law, economic stability, and institutional integrity. As we celebrate this milestone, we are compelled to speak truth to power. Our democracy is currently facing its gravest existential threats since the inception of the Fourth Republic, driven by data-verified systemic failures that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration can no longer ignore.

First, the economic foundation of our democracy is rapidly eroding, directly threatening citizen loyalty to the state. According to recent 2026 data released by the World Bank, Nigeria’s national poverty rate has spiked to an alarming 63%, pushing over 140 million citizens into multidimensional poverty.

While macro-level figures show a technical deceleration in headline inflation to roughly 15%, the reality on the streets tells a story of extreme survival. Real incomes have failed to match historical spikes, leaving everyday families unable to afford basic food items, transport, and healthcare. A hungry populace cannot effectively defend democratic ideals.

Compounding this economic misery is the unyielding monster of public sector corruption. Transparency International’s 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranks Nigeria 142nd out of 182 countries, scoring a dismal 26 out of 100. This ranking places Nigeria behind 33 other African nations, signifying severe stagnation in our anti-corruption frameworks. Billions of Naira and millions of dollars in oil-related revenues continue to vanish. The recent publication of the 2022 Auditor-General’s report unmasked staggering, unaccounted-for revenues within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). When the commonwealth is systematically plundered by an untamed political class, the moral legitimacy of democracy is fundamentally destroyed.

Insecurity remains a bleeding wound across the country. Banditry, mass kidnappings of schoolchildren, and terrorist activities by groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP continue unabated in the Northwest, Northeast, and Northcentral regions. Recent incidents, including the abduction of dozens of pupils in Oyo and Borno states, highlight the government’s inability to secure lives and learning environments. Separatist agitations in the Southeast and calls for Oduduwa nation in the Southwest further fragment national cohesion. These threats have displaced communities, crippled agriculture, and driven food inflation. If unaddressed, they will not only undermine economic reforms but also invite a dangerous cycle where citizens lose faith in the state’s monopoly on violence, potentially legitimizing self-help and vigilante justice.

Furthermore, the very guardrails of our democracy; the judiciary and electoral independence are under siege. Civil society assessments heading toward the 2027 general elections reveal a dangerous trend of nepotism and political bias in judicial and electoral umpire appointments. When citizens lose faith in the judiciary to act as an impartial arbiter, and when opposition parties are systematically weakened by state-backed interference, the ballot box becomes obsolete. A democracy without credible alternative choices is nothing but a civilian autocracy in disguise.

NACAT is equally horrified by the shrinking civic space and the rising hostility against the free press, the fourth estate of the realm. Media Rights Agenda data documented no fewer than 86 distinct attacks on journalists and media organizations recently. Investigative journalists and whistleblowers who dare to expose oil theft, subsidy fraud, and high-level corruption face arbitrary arrests, state surveillance, and physical violence. A democracy that silences its watchdogs is actively engineering its own blindness, shielding corrupt actors from the accountability required to sustain public trust.

Parallel to this governance decay is the worsening cross-border vulnerability of our citizens, driven by human trafficking. As the domestic economy suffocates everyday families, criminal syndicates are capitalizing on the desperate “Japa” phenomenon. Scores of young Nigerians are trafficked across the Mediterranean and Gulf states weekly under the guise of fake employment, only to be subjected to modern-day slavery and organ harvesting. By failing to secure the domestic economy, the government has inadvertently outsourced its youth population to international trafficking cartels, depleting the human capital necessary to build a prosperous democratic nation.

The gross implications of these accumulated failures are catastrophic. If President Bola Tinubu’s government fails to act immediately, the first casualty will be total civil disillusionment. History has proven that when citizens find no distinction between the economic hardships of democracy and the oppression of dictatorship, they become indifferent to democratic survival. This widespread apathy provides the perfect breeding ground for constitutional subversion and civil unrest.

Secondly, the failure to decisively halt institutional corruption will lead to complete state insolvency. As revenue leakages persist through oil theft and unaccounted-for NNPCL revenues, Nigeria will be forced to rely on predatory foreign borrowings with roll-over risks, as warned by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). When a democratic state spends over 80% of its revenue merely servicing debts while public infrastructure rots, it ceases to function as a sovereign entity and becomes a vassal state to international creditors.

Thirdly, the unchecked targeting of journalists and the manipulation of democratic institutions will inevitably trigger a dangerous breakdown of law and order. When peaceful avenues for grievance expression; such as investigative journalism, protests, and unbiased court litigations—are blocked by the state, citizens are driven to extreme alternatives. The rise of non-state actors, localized insurgencies, and regional agitations are direct symptoms of a broken justice system that refuses to listen to its people.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must understand that history will not judge his administration by the grandiloquence of Democracy Day speeches, but by deliberate, aggressive structural reforms. The government must immediately enforce the total digitization of public procurement processes to eliminate contract inflation and compel absolute financial transparency from revenue-generating agencies like the NNPCL.

Additionally, the administration must safeguard our civic space by calling state security apparatuses to order, ensuring total compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, and creating a secure environment for journalists. On this Democracy Day, NACAT demands a paradigm shift. President Tinubu must act decisively to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from the clutches of corruption and systemic neglect, or prepare to face the wrath of an unravelling nation.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
