A 59-year-old man has died in Porto, Portugal, after being accidentally pinned by his partner in an incident police have described as “highly unusual.”
According to Portuguese daily Correio da Manhã, the tragedy occurred at the couple’s home in Campanhã when the woman slipped while getting out of bed in the early hours.
The man, who was lying on the floor near the wall, became trapped in a position that cut off his breathing.
Neighbours, alerted by the woman’s screams, rushed in to help. “It took five men to lift her off him,” one neighbour told local media. “We tried everything, but it was too late.”
Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but efforts to resuscitate him failed.
Police confirmed the death was caused by accidental asphyxia, ruling out foul play.
The couple, together for years but unmarried, were described by friends as inseparable. Neighbours said the woman was devastated and is receiving psychological support.
