Fulani community cries out, demands end to attacks

The Fulani community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has called for an immediate end to what it described as unprovoked attacks on its members and the killing of their livestock by suspected youths in the area.

The appeal was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary of the group, Abdullahi Yusuf, who urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to intervene to prevent further violence.

Yusuf alleged that on Thursday, October 2, 2025, suspected Berom youths attacked a Fulani herder, identified as Aliyu Sale Shehu, around Rim community in Rim Ward, leaving him with gunshot wounds.

He said the attackers also killed one cow and injured eight others.

“The Fulani community in Riyom wishes to draw the attention of the public to yet another unprovoked attack on our people,” the statement read. “They attack our people mercilessly, and when some victims attempt to defend themselves, they are labeled as aggressors.”

The group expressed concern over what it described as the authorities’ silence following the incident, warning that such inaction could lead to retaliatory violence.

“Since the Thursday attack, there has been no statement, no action, and no justice from the government or community leaders.

The silence only emboldens the attackers and increases the suffering of innocent Fulani herders,” Yusuf stated.

He urged security agencies to act swiftly to forestall reprisals and ensure justice for victims.

“The Fulani are equal citizens of Riyom and Plateau State, and our lives and property must be protected. Enough is enough,” the statement concluded.
