No fewer than 100 commercial drivers and passengers in Ondo State benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday as part of efforts to promote safer roads.

The exercise, organised by the Ondo Town Unit Command of the FRSC, took place at Lagos Park in Oka, Ondo, and featured blood pressure checks, blood sugar screening and health counselling for motorists and commuters.

Speaking during the programme, the Unit Commander, Assistant Corps Commander Joseph Ajayi, said the initiative formed part of activities marking the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS) Week.

Ajayi explained that the outreach was carried out in partnership with the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Ondo Town, to ensure that commercial drivers remain medically fit for their duties.

According to him, regular health checks for drivers are essential to road safety, noting that untreated conditions such as hypertension and diabetes could lead to medical emergencies while driving.

He added that the command would sustain public enlightenment campaigns to improve compliance with road safety regulations and encourage responsible driving.

The unit commander also said the RTSSS Week was designed to increase awareness among fleet operators and facilitate the registration of transport operators yet to enrol in the scheme.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the FRSC to reducing road crashes by ensuring that drivers are medically fit and comply with established transport safety standards.

Chairman of Lagos Park, Oka, Mr Akindolani Koleola, commended the FRSC for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to commercial motorists.

He noted that the programme would contribute to improved safety on the highways.
