Correcting a child is essential, whether at school, in church, or at home, as it plays a vital role in shaping them into responsible adults. Unfortunately, those who are meant to guide children toward the right path are often the very ones leading them astray.
A teacher recently reported that a female learner in upper primary in her school called another teacher “nonsense teacher.” It was later discovered that this same learner had also reported the head of school to her parents. Why? Because the head had cautioned her for not taking her studies seriously. The child was often seen playing and chatting during lessons instead of paying attention, so the school head advised her to sit up and focus more in class.
However, when the girl got home, she reported the head of school to her parents. In response, her father sent a lengthy warning message to the school head, instructing her never to address his children that way again.
These are the same children whose parents expect them to become great in life. But how? By encouraging laziness and disrespect? Parents must understand that the seeds they sow in their children today are the fruits they will reap tomorrow.
The Bible clearly says, “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the rod of correction will drive it far from him” (Proverbs 22:15).
Helping your children to be rude and undisciplined is not love, it is harm disguised as care. True love includes correction and guidance. Parents must be mindful of what they define as love today, because the results will manifest in the future.
