A fatal road accident on Sunday morning claimed the lives of 21 passengers along the Kano–Zaria highway, following a collision between a Toyota Hummer Bus and a DAF trailer.
The crash, which occurred at about 8:23 a.m. at Kasuwar Dogo in Dakatsalle, involved 24 passengers in total.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident was triggered by a traffic violation on the part of the Hummer Bus driver.
Confirming the incident, FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Mohammed Bature, described it as one of the deadliest crashes witnessed in recent times.
A statement issued by the FRSC spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, revealed that the bus (registration number KMC 171 YM) veered into the wrong lane and collided head-on with the trailer (registration number GWL 422 ZE), resulting in a fire that engulfed both vehicles.
“The crash was caused by a route violation by the Hummer Bus driver. The impact of the collision led to a fire outbreak,” the FRSC said.
Twenty-one occupants of the bus were burned beyond recognition, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The victims’ remains have been deposited at the Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary, and the injured are receiving treatment at Garun Malam General Hospital.
Emergency responders from the FRSC, Federal and State Fire Services, and the Nigeria Police Force quickly arrived at the scene.
The wreckage was cleared, and traffic has since returned to normal on the route.
Sector Commander Bature expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a full recovery.
He also warned motorists against reckless driving, particularly dangerous overtaking, route violations, and nighttime travel.
