Several farmers have been killed and others injured following separate attacks by suspected bandits on farming communities in Zamfara State.
The attacks reportedly occurred on Friday in Lugga, Gwabro and Gwammanan communities, where residents had gone to clear and prepare their farmlands ahead of the rainy season farming activities.
Details of the incident emerged on Sunday through reports from security and conflict monitors in the North-West, who said the armed assailants stormed the communities while farmers were working on their fields, leaving multiple casualties in their wake.
Although the exact number of those killed and injured could not be immediately verified, the attacks have heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in rural parts of the state.
Observers warned that the continued targeting of farmers could have far-reaching consequences for food production and livelihoods.
They noted that persistent insecurity may discourage farming activities, potentially leading to reduced harvests, higher food prices and increased economic hardship for households across the country.
The latest incident has further underscored the challenges facing farming communities in Zamfara, where repeated attacks by armed groups have continued to disrupt agricultural activities and threaten residents’ means of survival.
