A Common Misconception About Children’s Behaviour, by Victoria Hanson

There’s a widespread misconception among parents: “Leave children to behave as they like, they’ll change as they grow.”

But here’s the question: Change how? And into what?

Let’s be clear, no child will change positively without intentional guidance and training.

For instance, a child who is slow or unwilling to do household chores will not magically become diligent with age.

Positive character traits like; responsibility, discipline, and hard work must be nurtured through consistent effort, encouragement, and correction.

            Why is this important?

Too often, parents excuse laziness or irresponsibility by blaming it on age. “He’s still young, he’ll grow out of it,” they say. But that mindset only delays development and reinforces poor habits.

But the Bible paints a very different picture.

            What does the Bible say?

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

However, this verse reminds us that the values we instill in our children today will shape their future. Training doesn’t happen by accident, it takes effort, intention, and consistency.

Children grow into what they are trained to become.

Don’t expect your child to know what they haven’t been taught.
            .
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 also echoes that teaching is an ongoing process:
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Teaching children requires consistency, conversation, and conscious effort. Therefore, do not rely on time to correct what only intentional training can shape.

If you want your child to grow into a responsible adult, start planting those seeds today.

Train them, instruct them, correct them, and encourage them. Lead them by example., because the seeds you sow today will determine the fruit your child bears tomorrow.

Be faithful with the responsibility God has given you. Raise children not just to grow, but to grow well.
