The Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo on Friday night.
Despite Nigeria dominating the opening exchanges, it was Madagascar who took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game.
Kari Eshan rose highest to head the ball into the net after being left unmarked inside the Nigerian box, giving the Barea a surprise advantage.
The Super Eagles pushed for an equaliser and came close on several occasions, but Madagascar remained resolute in defence.
Alex Iwobi thought he had levelled the scores in the 33rd minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a foul on the Madagascar goalkeeper.
Nigeria eventually found the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time, with debutant George Ilenikhena producing a composed finish to make it 1-1.
Madagascar enjoyed more possession early in the second half as Nigeria struggled to regain their rhythm.
The visitors had a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the 51st minute, but captain Rayan Raveloson missed from a promising position.
The Super Eagles responded and completed the comeback in the 65th minute when substitute Moses Usor found the back of the net to put Nigeria ahead.
Nigeria held on to secure all three points and will now turn their attention to their next qualifying fixture against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday.
