Four miners have been killed after a mining pit collapsed on them in Tangur community, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred around 10am on Tuesday while the victims were working inside a tunnel at the mining site, according to a youth leader in the community, Christopher Luka.
Luka, who confirmed the incident, said the victims comprised two men and two women.
He said one of the deceased was buried on Tuesday in accordance with Islamic rites, while the remaining three were buried on Wednesday as Christians.
Another resident, Maren Jacob, also confirmed the incident, saying the victims were involved in sand excavation at a pit located near a riverbank in the community.
Jacob added that the bodies of the four miners were recovered on Tuesday after the collapse.
The latest incident adds to a growing number of deaths linked to mining pit collapses in Plateau State, despite the state government’s ban on illegal mining activities.
On August 13, seven miners were killed when a mining pit collapsed in Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.

Residents have continued to raise concerns over the dangers associated with unregulated mining activities, particularly the collapse of poorly secured pits.
