A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, has been found dead inside a domestic well in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The Kwara State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle, stating that firefighters recovered Ayeni’s body from the well located beside Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin.
Adekunle said the agency received a distress call concerning the incident and arrived at the scene at about 8:42am, before commencing efforts to retrieve the victim.
He said, “Our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52.”
The Fire Service said the circumstances surrounding Ayeni’s presence inside the well remained unclear, adding that children in the neighbourhood first noticed the situation and alerted elders.
“According to information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity,” the statement added.
The agency noted that the well was located close to the deceased’s residence.
Following the recovery operation, the victim’s body was handed over to the police for further investigation and necessary action.
The Fire Service said, “The body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action.”
The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to properly secure and cover domestic wells and other open water sources to prevent avoidable deaths.
Muhammed also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children were not left unattended around wells, drainage channels and other potentially dangerous areas.
