A former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu, has called on all Nigerians to ensure the peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections.
Ojikutu made the call in a statement on Monday in Lagos,
She advised Nigerians to shun violence or acts that could undermine peace before, during and after the elections.
The former deputy governor said that all stakeholders must ensure the country come out of the elections united; as that would promote the greatness and progress of the country.
“The 2019 general elections call for caution and we should eschew violence that could jeopardise the fragile peace in the country.
“This is the time for sober reflection for all and sundry and all hands should be on deck if we are to attain greatness in the comity of nations.
“The forthcoming elections should unite us rather than being seen as a ‘do or die’. All the gladiators should know that we have no other country to run to.
“There should be no victor no vanquished after the elections, ‘’ Ojikutu said.
The former deputy governor said that for Nigeria to be great as a nation, the citizens must co-exist peacefully; love and respect one another.
Ojikutu urged Nigerians to see themselves as one big family regardless of ethnic, religious or political differences.
While wishing Nigerians a happy New Year, she called on the citizens to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness and be more committed to the Nigerian project.
Ojikutu also called for vigilance in view of the security challenges in the country.
She urged President Muhammadu Buhari to continue to show leadership at this defining moment of the country’s history.
“As the whole world looks up to Nigeria to show leadership in the African continent, I call upon President Muhammadu Buhari to show leadership at this defining moment in the history of our great country so that the ‘labours of our heroes past shall not be in vain’.
“Since the price for eternal liberty is vigilance, that should be our watchword all the time.
“Hence, we must be wary of any unusual action in our neighbourhood, so that we continue to nip crime in the bud.
“I wish all Nigerians a happy and prosperous new year, ‘’ she said.
