British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, celebrated for his performances in the Star Trek and X-Men film franchises, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart passed away on Wednesday at his residence in Los Angeles, United States, after what his family described as a “brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

His death was announced in a statement posted on his official Instagram page on Thursday. According to the statement, the actor was surrounded by his wife, Sunny Ozell, relatives and close friends in his final moments.

“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” the statement read.

It added that his final moments were filled with music, prayers, tears and laughter, as loved ones gathered around him.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all. We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

Born in Mirfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, Stewart began his acting journey with the Royal Shakespeare Company before building an acclaimed career across theatre, television and film over six decades.

The statement praised his distinctive voice and acting ability, noting that his performances covered different genres and explored the complexities of human experience.

“His sonorous voice and singular talent will forever be synonymous with indelible performances in every genre. He explored the human condition in all its poetic complexity and brought hope not only to the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but into science fiction’s most iconic final frontier aboard the Starship Enterprise,” it said.

Beyond his acting career, Stewart was recognised for his charitable activities and advocacy on human rights, support for survivors of domestic violence, refugees, veterans’ mental health services and animal welfare.

The statement also described him as a knight, chancellor, motor sport enthusiast and lifelong supporter of Huddersfield Football Club.

“He will be remembered for the dignity, compassion and humanity he brought to every role – in his art and life,” it added.

Prompt News reports Stewart became widely recognised for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which aired from 1987 to 1994. He later returned to the character in several films and the television series Star Trek: Picard.

He also gained international acclaim for playing Professor Charles Xavier, popularly called Professor X, in the X-Men franchise, where he portrayed the telepathic leader of the mutant community in several instalments.

His career earned him recognition as one of Britain’s distinguished stage and screen performers, with his commanding presence helping to establish his place in major film and television productions.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his two children.
