A well-known hunter in Osun State, popularly called “Alfa Elefon,” has died after being attacked by a wild buffalo during a hunting expedition, prompting a swift retaliatory operation by the Hunters Group of Nigeria (HGN), who later tracked and killed the animal.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in a remote forest area where the deceased had embarked on a hunting mission. Sources said the buffalo charged at him, inflicting fatal injuries.
Despite efforts to rescue him, he succumbed to the wounds. His body was buried the next day in accordance with Islamic rites.
The news of his death sent shockwaves through the community, especially among members of the HGN, where Alfa Elefon was highly respected.
In response, the Osun State Commander of the Hunters Group, Chief Balogun Nureni Hammed, popularly known as A-K Leader, led a team of experienced hunters on a mission to locate and eliminate the animal.
According to local sources, the search lasted several hours before the hunters finally sighted and killed the buffalo, neutralising any further threat to people in the area.
Residents have praised the hunters for their quick and effective response, saying the action helped restore calm and safety to the community.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations about the dangers local hunters face in the wild and the urgent need for improved safety protocols during forest expeditions.
