Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
Shettima had departed Abuja on September 20 to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual gathering of world leaders.
A statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, said the Vice President delivered Tinubu’s national statement during the General Debate.
At the session, Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s call for reforms to the UN Security Council, including permanent African representation, while also advocating improved access to global financing, stronger climate support and deeper multilateral cooperation.
The Vice President also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group.
At the meeting, he conveyed President Tinubu’s position that African countries should move beyond exporting raw minerals and place greater emphasis on processing, manufacturing and adding value to their natural resources.
Shettima also attended a high-level education financing event jointly hosted by Nigeria and Italy, where he reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education as a key investment in productivity, human capital development and national prosperity.
He also supported the Global Partnership for Education’s $5bn financing campaign.
During the visit, the Vice President met with Nigerians living abroad and highlighted the contributions of their investments, expertise and networks to Nigeria’s development.
His other engagements included meetings with the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission and the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed.
According to the statement, Shettima used the meetings to advance Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace and security.

He also restated President Tinubu’s call for a more representative and equitable global order.
