The mayor and municipal council of Newark, New Jersey’s largest city, have officially designated December 12 as Burna Boy Day in honour of the Nigerian Afrofusion star’s global influence and cultural impact.
The proclamation was announced on Friday, the same day Burna Boy staged the US leg of his No Sign of Weakness tour at the 18,000-capacity Prudential Center in Newark.
According to the city’s municipal council, the recognition celebrates Burna Boy’s role as a global cultural ambassador whose music and advocacy have positively touched lives across different parts of the world. The council noted that the Grammy-winning singer has consistently used his international platform to spotlight African culture, promote unity and inspire audiences through both music and humanitarian efforts.
The official citation read:
“Whereas, the Newark Municipal Council proudly recognises Burna Boy, an internationally acclaimed artist, cultural ambassador and humanitarian whose work has uplifted communities across the world.”
It further stated:
“Whereas, Burna Boy has used his global platform to celebrate Moran culture, promote unity and inspire millions through music, advocacy and philanthropy.”
Reacting to the honour, Burna Boy expressed deep appreciation, describing the gesture as emotional and meaningful. He said the recognition made him feel welcomed and connected to the state.
