Tragedy struck in Delta State after a 100-level student was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother following a disagreement that escalated into a violent confrontation.
The victim, identified as Joseph, 19, was reportedly killed on June 17 by his elder brother, Fejiro, 21, with whom he shared accommodation arranged by their parents while both attended the same higher institution in the state.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, described the development as disturbing and called for stronger moral upbringing among young people.
According to Edafe, the brothers had engaged in a heated argument that degenerated into a physical fight inside their residence.
Although neighbours initially intervened and separated them, the dispute reportedly resumed shortly afterwards.
He explained that the brothers later moved to the rear of the building, where the altercation turned deadly.
The police spokesman alleged that Fejiro armed himself with a kitchen knife and attacked his younger brother during the renewed confrontation.
“Despite efforts by neighbours to separate them, the fight continued. The elder brother allegedly stabbed the younger one and fled the scene,” Edafe said.
He added that the suspect remains at large, while efforts are underway to track him down and bring him to justice.
The command noted that investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the motive behind the attack.
Edafe said preliminary information suggested the disagreement may have stemmed from a minor domestic issue, although details were still being verified by investigators.
He also expressed concern over the growing influence of social vices among youths, stating that the tragic incident raised questions about possible involvement in cult-related activities or substance abuse.
While stressing that investigations were ongoing, he urged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the moral development of their children.
The police spokesman further emphasised the importance of instilling values such as love, tolerance and conflict resolution in young people to prevent similar tragedies.
He assured the public that the command would continue its search for the suspect and ensure that justice is served once he is apprehended.
