Three people were reportedly killed by suspected herders on Wednesday in the Mbasombo community, located in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.
This occurred less than 24 hours after suspected herders killed two people in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.
A resident, who went by the name Abraham, revealed that the attacking herders arrived in the village during the night.
“Residents were already asleep when we heard sporadic gunshots. They opened fire indiscriminately and set many houses on fire, and the sudden attack made some people flee their homes into surrounding bushes and nearby villages.
“Three corpses were recovered while several people sustained injury,” Abraham narrated.
When reached on Thursday, the Chairman of the local government, Timothy Adi, confirmed that three people had been killed but noted that the situation had since remained relatively calm.
He said, “I’m in a meeting. The casualty figure is three; the situation now is relatively calm.”
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, also confirmed the incident.
“Incident confirmed,” Anene simply sent in a text message.
