A speeding driver was arrested on Sunday after fatally hitting a female pedestrian at Mosalasi Roundabout, along the Ipaja axis of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the driver of a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV veered off the road and mounted the pedestrian walkway, striking the yet-to-be-identified woman who died on the spot.
According to a statement by LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the lone crash was caused by excessive speeding.
The vehicle also crashed into a nearby livestock compound, damaging a perimeter fence and billboard.
Witnesses said the driver attempted to flee the scene but was swiftly apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to police officers from the Gowon Estate Division.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and undergoing investigation,” Taofiq stated, adding that the victim’s remains were handed over to the authorities for necessary procedures.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the dangers of reckless driving.
“This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of excessive speed.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and urge all motorists to prioritize safety,” he said.
